Acts To Amuse

Willkommen

“At [insert company], I know that I will be given, and will welcome, the very best opportunities, help and advice to expand my knowledge and develop a successful, achievement-driven career.”
- Application to 3M, submitted 11th November 2007

Anyone who has ever received a letter from me will recognise the ’scene setting’ opening paragraph…

Trying to find a balance between university, friends, career prospects and the ever-present lure of the bars is proving difficult. I’m currently sat in my bedroom at home. The Sunset Tree by The Mountain Goats is spinning on my hard disk. The hypnotic smoke from a burning incense stick is starting to hurt my eyes but I feel reluctant to rub them. Interestingly, I am using one of the last of the incense sticks that Rachel bought me for my birthday almost two years ago. Your biggest weakness is your past.

Fallowfield, Manchester: Früh 2006

“Poor decisions can affect purely the present. Good decisions are made using a great deal of thought, over a period of time, taking into account how the decision will affect various situations at various times, both present and future, in the hope that it will bring achievements, successes and contentment.”
- Application to MARS Inc, submitted 13th November 2007

Then perhaps I’ll recall some memorable occasions that provide deep seeded and irreversible connections between me and the person receiving the letter. So here it goes.

You all remember the farewell message that marked the end of ThisCharmingMan.co.uk. Chris and I were walking around Fallowfield in a drunken haze, desperately trying to remember how we had landed up in such a miserable situation. I was eager to get back to my room to finish off the farewell message and Chris was complaining about one of his many friends. My beer bottle collection was thirty-three brands strong and Chris’ can tower was a fitting tribute to the locker can collection saga of sixth form.

It was around that time that I lay most nights awake, waiting for the fire alarm to sound, just in time to deploy my finely tuned escape procedure. In hindsight, my physical escape from that tower block every night acted as a good metaphor for the ever-present emotional and mental escape that I experienced. Everything I stood for geared itself towards getting away from that tower block and Manchester University.

I collapsed onto my bed. I had just returned from a visit to see James in Leeds. I think we had been to see Red Sparowes the night before. Games of pool turned into murky violence and the Irish Keep Gate Crashing. My phone rings and it’s my mum reminding me that we were all going out for my grandma’s birthday tonight. Damn. I had not slept for a period approaching 40 hours. This is a low.

Then there are better memories. Winning games of table tennis in the basement of Manor Hall comes naturally to me. Prowling the deserted corridors for a piece of chocolate and replaying Beneath A Steel Sky. Stealing ice cubes from the freezer. I asked your name, you asked th,,….. I still miss MSN conversations into the night with Kate and the SUN/MOON/STARS, JUMP! progression. Sitting in Pizza Champion. Visits from Dave and Simon. Being friends with Arabella. Playing pool with Mike. Installing Fedora with The Stick (WoT?!)

“I believe that the passion I show for my subject and my enthusiasm for communicating new ideas can be successfully utilised in a competitive working environment.”
- Application to Vauxhall, submitted 14th November 2007

To end proceedings, I’ll generally discuss events in the present/near past. Formulaic.

Aha. I haven’t been updating my site nearly as much as I would have liked over the past few weeks. This has primarily been down to my efforts to secure a work placement for my year in industry next year. This involved filling out tedious competency based recruitment questions, enduring telephone interviews and attending assessment/interview days (well, actually, I only had to attend 1 interview day because they offered me the job).

Fortunately, my efforts haven’t been in vain and on Monday I accepted a job to work for MARS Incorporated. The job is based in Slough and therefore that will be my place of residence between July 2008 and July 2009. Alongside Mars bars they produce Snickers, Maltesers, M&Ms, Milky Way, Starburst, Galaxy and a whole host of other brand names in various confectionery sectors. I therefore hope to have a plentiful supply of chocolate and other confectionery.

I will be working for Mars Information Services in their web development department. My role will centre on LAMP technologies and their Microsoft equivalents, delivering web based solutions for clients across the Mars business. I will also be working as a PHP developer to create applications on web communities such as Facebook and Second Life (Cool, eh?).

YES! I have recently been to Düsseldorf to visit James. I will save the details for another time but I will mention that if you make the effort to go and visit him too, it will be well worth your time.

In other news, the recent major story involving Morrissey can’t go unmentioned, especially here. It seems to me that once again the NME have chopped up a Morrissey interview to give it sensational bias, which in turn has been blown out of all proportion by the world’s media. This comes only a matter of days after a teacher in Sudan was arrested for naming a teddy bear Mohamed. I’m in a state of tragic disbelief.

“Andrew thrusted back and forth, his hands pinning her up against the dirty wall. Nish, still dazed from his last hit, sat drooped in the corner of the room oblivious to the muted screaming echoing off the dampened walls.”

  2. Well done for getting the job! I hope you enjoy it. Also wanted to check you are still free on Sunday, and if so when would you like to meet me (at some train station probably).

  3. I feel rather ‘light headed’ this morning and I have to go to 3663. Not good.

I am still free on Sunday. How about Piccadilly at 06.45pm? We could ‘cruise’ the Christmas Market before sampling the local hospitality.

It is officially Winter now. I like that. I am drinking hot Vimto and thinking about [The] snowm[a]en. Up, up and away.

  4. Sure. That’ll be fine. See you then.

  5. One minute later and your comment would have shown 22:22. We often plan meetings on TIH. C u 2mrw.
