He Drives Like An Engineer
It’s Wednesday the 29th and at 13:45 I was supposed to be at Luton Airport waiting for my brother to pick me up and take me to Bath. I phoned him at 10:00 to check the times and make the story more believable in front of his boss. I mean you can’t just tell your manager you’ve got to cut the meeting short to get to an interview for a job with another company. You have to lie.
‘Girlfriend’
The summer break is rapidly drawing to a close and university studies are looming over an otherwise stress free future. I have once again managed to fritter away another summer sitting at home, using barely any creative or intellectual skills, resulting in absolutely nothing of use. Fortunately, I am pleased with the steady stream of (un)social meetings and gatherings that I’ve been able to organise and drag myself along to.
I was talking to David yesterday on MSN. The End.
No. I was talking to David yesterday on MSN and I told him that James leaving for Germany had somehow made me feel inexplicably empty. In agreement, we thought it was strange that although it made little difference to us whether James was in Leeds or Düsseldorf, there was something symbolic about his move to another country. It accentuates the feeling of friends being so far away, always that little bit further than I would like. I have invested a considerable amount of effort in order to stay close to those who are physically distant. It’s a kick in the teeth when they scatter even further.
The Hollyoaks Dance
I’d like to offer my gratitude to Emma for her letting me and others (James, Chris & Andrew) stay over at her house in Bristol last week. Andrew deserves praise for his incompetent attempts at drawing during a Friday evening game of Pictionary, in which James was supposed to guess what this was:

The following evening we got out the Trivial Pursuit and in order to make amends for the previous night, Andrew insisted he played in a team on his own. Sure enough, he defeated everyone else but had to stay up until four o’clock in the morning for the privilege. His competitive nature and the fact that he was winning from the start forced him to stay up long beyond his usual bedtime. Ha. I put my poor team performance with James down to the fact that we considered ‘Tommy Cooper’ as a potential answer for every question that came up.
On Saturday, Emma took us to an ice-skating disco on top of a multi storey car park in the centre of the city. Having not been ice-skating for 8 years, I was understandably shaky at first but by the end of the disco, I felt a little more competent (only after many embarrassing tumbles). James was a sickeningly good skater and even managed a few decorative skating formations. Chris was petrified of the ice in the beginning but his confidence rose and he was soon gliding across the ice as though it was his intention to crash magnificently into the side barriers. Emma and Andrew’s Pulp Fiction ice dancing left me looking horribly un-cool.
Chris left on the Sunday to go to Bangor. Okay, it’s an old one but we managed to rejuvenate the Bangor / Bang Her joke rather successfully over the weekend. Amusingly, I bumped into Chris’ mum (Ms Lumby) in Oldham a few days ago. It gave me great satisfaction to slip in the comment, “Yeah, he went to Bangor” during our conversation.
A short and nondescript list concerning other events
It’s nearly midnight now and I’m starting to fade so I’ll consolidate other events into a list.
- My knowledge of the Travelodge network came in handy when I guided a lost couple to their hotel in the centre of Manchester. I shared the tip with James who had patiently accompanied me.
- The fat girls on the bus were too painful to speak about.
- Stornoway. You are too hot.
- I have finally been given an official 3663 tie after three years of asking for one.
- I really really love receiving written letters and anything else that is hand written. I will keep them all forever.
- Keep a keen eye open for guerrilla sign alterations.
- Madeleine McCann has been missing for 119 days (correct as this went to server)
- You should never, ever take a holiday in Cardiff. On a related note, I am never going to work for General Electric. Emma will verify this.
The next 8 days will be exceptionally busy.. This weekend, I will be travelling to Scotland for Connect Festival, something I have still not properly prepared for. After that, I will be enjoying a mini festival in the form of three back-to-back gig nights (Regina Spektor, Tilly & The Wall, Architecture In Helsinki). This will mean I may be away from my computer (and more importantly this website!) for unusually large lapses of time. I do hope to keep updates rolling in through my new-fangled train of thoughts.
Boom (eritis). I can’t be bothered reading this back.
Goodnight xcx

I noticed that there is a Travelodge (which has possibly been there a long time)opposite Ashton Moss today. It just surprised me.
30th August, 2007 at 5:54 pm :
When KT and me stayed in a Travelodge there was one giant towel that was the size of a small country, and the other was tiny, like a fabric stamp. Maybe we accidentally booked for a giant and a dwarf to stay ( I know KT would agree with this as she insists I am small, and I insists she is giant). Or maybe it was just a normal towel and a hand towel, and they forgot there was a second person in the room. Much more possible. This post was pointless.
30th August, 2007 at 8:31 pm :
I am hoping tm stay in that Travelodge soon.

What sort of Labour Government encourages gambling, clearly something that should not be encouraged from such a political standpoint? Does anyone else think it is ridiculous that it is illegal to advertise smoking and food with any unhealthy content whatsoever yet gambling adverts are not allowed all throughout the day. Even alcohol adverts are supposedly to only be shown after 9pm nowadays.
What a ludiicrous idea. I can’t believe that anyone started smoking or drinking based upon television or radio advertisement(usually only Honda have more entertaining adverts). Nor can I believe that a ban on advertising certain foods will stop people from getting fat. However, I am certain that by freely advertising casino halls, or whatever they should be called, then it encourages people to earn more and more debt. Who would have done the National Lottery or attended Cosmo Bingo if they weren’t advertised? Political hypocrisy at its most scathing.
P.S. Tom, do you know that the graphic for the Radiohead link isn’t working, or is this just my computer?
3rd September, 2007 at 10:25 pm :
Ah, the difficulty of posting normal comments from my mobile phone.
David: Once again, you have entertained and informed me with your commentary on my site which always comes at a time when my presence is lacking. The graphic for the Radiohead link is not missing as far as I know. You weren’t trying to surf my site on your Acorn or something?
The Western governments are as bent and twisted as the regimes they are trying to ‘liberate’. I do know that advertising laws in this country tend to be shrouded in controversy and immorality. Take the [link=http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/uk_politics/1931373.stm] Bernie Eccleston/Labour cigarette advertising deal[/link]. Having just returned from a muscial festival, there are two lyrical quotes from the weekend that come to mind:
cunts are still running the world
SO
let! us! be! free!
4th September, 2007 at 4:47 pm :
Ha. That gaves me an idea.
No, the Radiohead link does not seem to work on my AMD Athlon processor running Microsoft Windows XP using Firefox 2.0.0.6
I will try running RiscOS 4.27 (or whatever it is currently) on a StrongARM processor and use !NetSurf or other browser later tonight to see if it works.
4th September, 2007 at 6:57 pm :
it works for me. Useful
OHHH XFO. soooo close.. Hello
4th September, 2007 at 9:11 pm :
I actually used the !Fresco browser, which seems to work well - that’s another browser standard which this site seems to support. However, the Radiohead link icon still doesn’t seem to come up on this computer. I have no idea why.
5th September, 2007 at 2:56 pm :
“XFO. Hello.” is just as good really.
All I can think is that you have accidently AdBlock-ed the Radiohead image. That would require you to have installed the Adblock extension for Firefox. Otherwise, I really can’t imagine why the ‘At Ease’ image and link on the main page wouldn’t show. It uses standard < img /> and < a /> tags.
Penelope shoot the apple off my head, I need to go to the store to get some SLEEP: Because I’ve run out of SLEEP.
I bought some Beirut tickets. Sorted.

[link=http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/lincolnshire/6988927.stm]This[/link] had better not be me in 50 years time. I need to kick my obsession with Travelodges. Look what it does to people.
Although I have already done so privately, I offer TIH pleasantries to Chris and KT who are both celebrating their birthdays today. Well done?!
11th September, 2007 at 6:29 pm :
Yey! Thanks Tom. Happy birthday KT.

11th September, 2007 at 9:38 pm :
I’ll add my "happy birthdays" for Chris and KT on here as I don’t appear to have Chris’ number for some reason and even if I had KT’s, I don’t know how much a text to Thailand would cost.
12th September, 2007 at 4:17 am :
A text to thailand will cost you 25pence, however i do not have my thai mobile number memorised, so i couldn’t tell it you. I may post it on here one day, just to see if any of you would text. It would amuse me at any rate.
Thankyou for the birthday pleasantries. Happy birthday for yesterday Chris. Apologies for the late response but the 6 hour time difference does make things somewhat difficult.
You’re probably all asleep now anyway.

20p with O2.
12th September, 2007 at 8:28 pm :
I think it’s 20p for Orange too. Although I haven’t checked.
ETA. ESTIMATED TIME ARRIVAL..something. I don’t know what to say after it. :ganjubars:
12th September, 2007 at 9:04 pm :
Hello, just whilst I’m quickly passing through I’d like to add belated birthday wishes from myself to the forementioned. I hope you had good times. Cheers Tom for the letter, I check my post everyday (for a bank card I’m expecting) and my lockers always empty so it was pleasing to have something within to read. Also while I’m here, cheers Rachel.. I had not seen that long Prague comment til today and am grateful for relevant response. xx
12th September, 2007 at 11:09 pm :
It’s all very cushy on here at the moment. I need to put some more effort in.
I am glad you received that letter. It was a very poor piece of post though. You must have been disappointed to open THAT. At least I know Fiona wasn’t giving me false German addresses. I wouldn’t put it past her.
13th September, 2007 at 12:02 am :
I should have given you an address of a nice, hairy frauline. If only I had one…damn.
Annnd, I though KT’s Thai phone wasn’t working?
CDG, like that French guy…I kid, I kid. Not about the code though, it is CDG.

ahhh. They have changed the voice of the automated woman on Orange. I don’t like it.
14th September, 2007 at 4:59 pm :
I know! i noticed that. I was going to text you but I thought it would be too boring. But for me they mix it up with the old OFFICIAL woman and the new friendly one and it’s horrid.
14th September, 2007 at 6:11 pm :
Are you suggesting that I am boring? It is particularly grating when the two voices mix.
14th September, 2007 at 10:00 pm :
err. no.
14th September, 2007 at 11:28 pm :
Very valley girl.
16th September, 2007 at 4:48 pm :
theSTICK’s reply may just have been my favourite:
16th September, 2007 at 6:38 pm :
I’m practically talking to myself now but…
I was just looking on some student forums for Huddersfield University and I came across a poster called ‘mrwinters’ who is apparently starting a course this time at Huddersfield. It’s sickening enough to read about the normality and stupidity of the kind of people at Huddersfield Uni, but to discover that ‘mrwinters’ is in fact [link=http://www.myspace.com/mrdanielwinters]Daniel Winters[/link] from Blue Coat is thoroughly disheartening.
It’s no wonder I spent the whole of last year kicking against the establishment.
25th September, 2007 at 8:46 am :
My thai phone is very choosy about who it will allow me to receive texts from. Fiona i did receive a text from you on it once upon a time, enquiry as to which phone you should be texting.
Kelly and Cake both seem to be able to text my Thai phone, as do my Mum and Dad, however if Shifty were to text i would never receive it. I don’t know why.
I still don’t know my thai number. Perhaps someone who does could post it here, just in case any TIHers felt the need to try it out.
This comment is irrelevant, but TIH is one of the few websites to load quickly on the school computers.

Yeah I have no idea why you dont get my texts. Thats why I text your english phone. Is anyone else here on T Mobile?
25th September, 2007 at 7:36 pm :
I feel like a stranger. My mother is on T-Mobile.
